With the GlowBelly Steamboat, Singaporean designer Tan Lun Cheak wanted to incorporate local traditions and habits into his creation. Hence the decision to design a table lamp that is relevant in the current design continuum and can also be used to cook food. Yes its true, the unique form factor of the Glowbelly Steamboat makes it possible to moonlight as a hot pot or steamboat, where food is cooked right on the dining table by dipping it in a simmering stock. When the cooking is done, the steamboat can be flipped around to turn it back into a lamp. Given its unique functionality, Tan Lun Cheak has to utilize pyro-ceramics, which is a special glass used for cookware, thus ensuring that it can withstand extreme temperature changes.
